Boston Scientific’s Neuromodulation business is a leading developer of microelectronic technologies that modulate nerve activity to treat disabling disorders, including chronic pain. Boston Scientific is seeking to advance the practice of neuromodulation. Today, the Company is investigating a number of innovate bionic technologies to treat other neural disorders, including migraine headaches, depression, Parkinson’s tremors, urinary incontinence, and erectile dysfunction.

Position Description
The position of Principal R&D Engineer will provide problem solving, applied research, and technical leadership in support of new and existing implantable medical devices. This person will work with a fair amount of autonomy in solving problems across various business units.

Position Responsibilities
This person is responsible for providing scientific, technical expertise, and leadership in solving high-visibility scientific challenges in the Neuromodulation organization. This person will work in a team environment, where design team membership may include Research, Technology, Product Planning/Marketing and Product Development. Activities will include literature research, liaison with academic and medical key opinion leaders, design of bench, human, and/or animal research studies to prove basic concept feasibility. Position will provide input for schedules, budgets and resource requirements for assigned projects. Accomplishments will be presented in written and oral form to audiences of customers, engineers, and senior management. This person is expected to provide mentoring and share experience and knowledge with others across the organization. Direct the work of technicians and other engineering staff and may include direct reporting and performance management. Discloses patentable new product ideas on a regular basis.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Understanding of the technical and regulatory requirements and processes associated with complex medical devices. Proven ability to work within product development process and to get things done. Understanding of medical-grade materials, dimensioning, geometric tolerancing, finite element analysis, thermal and structural analysis, and statistical methods. Knowledge of metal and plastic design requirements and fabrication techniques is required. Skills and competencies include: good written and oral communication skills, ability to work effectively with or lead in team environments, presentation skills, technical writing skills, capability to function as both team leader and technical lead, flexibility, influence management skills, project management skills and time management skills.


Experience:
Qualifications
Advanced degree in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering with 9+ years (PhD) or 12+ years (MS) experience. Bachelor’s degree will be considered if accompanied with significant experience (14+) years. Experience in mechanical design of medical devices and implantable products is preferred.
