Create innovative concepts, products, services, experiences and human interfaces through the design process while recognizing the influences from manufacturing, marketing, engineering, cost and timing.


Design innovative products and take the designs from concept through
Understand the consumer, especially in bathroom and kitchen settings, so that functional aspects can be considered along with aesthetic needs and cost objectives.
Maintain awareness of existing products and products offered by
competitor businesses.
Direct the day-to-day activities of an Industrial Design department.
Collaborate with inexperienced Industrial Designers.
Learn about a design-related area such as trends, color,
materials/processes, or CAID.

Major Tasks:

Work very closely with all new product development departments,
especially Engineering, Marketing, Purchasing, and Manufacturing, in a
team atmosphere achieving new product design requirements.
Create many diverse ideas in order to inspire and stimulate meanful
Participate in new product development activities which include
generation of new product concepts.
Determine appropriate approaches and execute design research, product
concept drawings, physical modeling, and product presentations.
Develop new methods of physical modeling as appropriate to cost and
timing factors.
Maintain current awareness of consumer competitor product offerings
including product design trends in both the U.S. and in foreign markets.
Develop and maintain familiarity with materials and processes used in
the industry and the manufacture of Kohler plumbing products.


May have one or more of the following expertise that would be unique and desirable to a given category:
Bathing - Hydrotherapy, a high affinity for water as an experiential
Sanitary - Materials expertise in ceramics, human factors understanding
related to hygiene, highly refined, three-dimensional styling
Furniture - Talent and aptitude with wood, mechanical sensibility,
sensitivity to designing traditional style
Kitchen - Materials expertise in stainless steel and cast iron,
knowledge and talent in kitchen design, cabinetry, culinary interest
Faucets - Materials and process knowledge in metals, mechanical
Performance Showering - A high affinity for water as an experiential
medium, fluid mechanics aptitude
Ability to create a vision and innovate

Supervisory Relationships:
Reports to Category Lead Industrial Designer
Dotted Line to Program Managers when working on projects.
Works under the direction of the Vice President of Industrial Design, Plumbing Americas Group.

Organization Relationships:
Works alongside Engineering, Marketing, Communications,and Manufacturing in a team environment.

External Business Relationships:
Occasional contact with design consultants.
Occasional contact with vendors and suppliers.
Attends industry trade show and seminars as needed to maintain awareness of competitor products, designs, and overall consumer product design trends.
Attends industrial design seminars and courses as necessary to maintain professional skills.

Bachelor's Degree from accredited university or college of industrial design with academic emphasis on product design. Typically has 2-4 years of experience in interior design, architecture, furniture, lighting, consumer research and/or other related field.
